What Is an RDIMM?
RDIMM stands for Registered Dual In-Line Memory Module. An RDIMM includes a register that buffers command and address signals before they reach the DRAM devices on the module.
This reduces the electrical load seen by the memory controller and allows supported server platforms to operate with larger memory populations and higher total memory capacities than many comparable unbuffered-memory configurations.
What Does “Registered” Mean?
Registered memory adds a register between the memory controller and portions of the DIMM signaling path. This changes how the memory subsystem handles command and address signals.

How Does RDIMM Memory Work?
The processor's memory controller communicates with memory installed across its channels. In an RDIMM architecture, command and address signals pass through a register on the DIMM before being distributed to the module's DRAM devices.
What Is ECC RDIMM?
An ECC RDIMM combines registered DIMM architecture with supported Error-Correcting Code functionality. These terms describe different properties of the module: RDIMM describes the registered architecture, while ECC describes error-protection capability.
ECC RDIMMs are extremely common in enterprise servers because server platforms frequently require both scalable registered memory architecture and memory error protection.
RDIMM and ECC Do Not Mean the Same Thing
RDIMM describes registered DIMM architecture. ECC describes a memory error-detection and correction capability. A module can therefore be correctly described as an ECC RDIMM because it has both characteristics.
This distinction matters when purchasing memory. Knowing that a module is ECC does not tell you whether it is an RDIMM, LRDIMM or ECC UDIMM.

RDIMMs and UDIMMs differ primarily in command/address signaling architecture and in the memory configurations they are designed to support.

RDIMM vs LRDIMM
Both RDIMM and LRDIMM are enterprise-oriented DIMM architectures, but they reduce memory subsystem loading in different ways. RDIMMs register command and address signals, while LRDIMMs use additional buffering designed to reduce the electrical load presented by the module.
LRDIMM has historically been useful in supported high-memory-density configurations, but it is not automatically a better replacement for RDIMM. The correct memory type depends on the server generation, processor and supported memory architecture.

DDR3, DDR4 & DDR5 RDIMM
Registered DIMMs exist across multiple DDR generations. Depending on the age of the server platform, you may encounter DDR3 RDIMM, DDR4 RDIMM or DDR5 RDIMM memory.
DDR generations are not interchangeable. A DDR4 RDIMM cannot replace a DDR5 RDIMM simply because both are registered DIMMs.
How Do You Identify an RDIMM?
Use the module label, exact manufacturer part number and server documentation. Appearance alone is not a reliable method for identifying server memory.
Not Every RDIMM Works in Every Server
Matching the word RDIMM is not enough to guarantee compatibility. The server must support the module's memory generation, capacity, speed, rank organization, population rules and electrical characteristics.
Processor selection can also affect supported memory speed, capacity and DIMM population. Check the exact server model, processor configuration and existing memory before planning an upgrade.
Can RDIMMs Be Mixed With UDIMMs or LRDIMMs?
Do not assume different DIMM architectures can be mixed. Server platforms define specific supported memory configurations, and UDIMM, RDIMM and LRDIMM are distinct memory types.
Even if a server generation supports more than one DIMM type in separate configurations, that does not mean those types can be installed together. Follow the manufacturer's population rules.
