TechSupplyDirect got my server out next business day and even though there was a part that my server didnt show up with they were quick to help and sent the part! got Exsi 8.0 running with Truenas as a VM for Plex and other media apps and its working great! While there is loads of refurb/used server hardware on flea bay, it always feels kinda sketchy buying on there and you have to hunt around for a machine with the config you want, otherwise risking having to make more sketchy purchases for individual parts and hoping the part numbers are right! TSD is the real deal though. Having this configurator made it so easy to get exactly the rig for my home rack that I wanted with the peace of mind that I was buying it from someone with the know-how to put my configuration into place correctly. While I am just a hobbyist homelabber, if I ever needed to spec a server for a small business or something I would not hesitate in the slightest coming back again. Shipping was super prompt and despite Fedex being less than gentle with the box, it held up alright and the server was so well packed in there. They even threw in some power cables! Even Dell charges you for those! Couldn't be more pleased with my experience.
This thing is so sick. I could have gotten a weak symbology rackmount NAS or this and for the price this thing provides LOADS more value. Customer service was extremely knowledgeable and caring too. I have every intention of ordering again as my homeland addiction worsens!
What I really like about a 2U storage server with 12 3.5" bays is that you can stack about 120TiB in the thing with modern drives in 2 RaidZ2 vdevs and only use 2Us on a rack (and also save your back from lifting 75 lb servers if you have to move them with the drives inserted). If you get it with the rear 2.5" bays you can even put the boot drives on the back for easy access. With a single low-power processor and some RAM this is basically the perfect TrueNAS machine. Props to the TSD team for making this super easy to order and for shipping it out so quickly so I could back up my old data before my old server gave out.
